With the end of the term approaching the lads were treated to a game of Footgolf at Burnage Rugby Club. It was an opportunity for the lads to try their hand (foot in this case) at a new sport. The squad was broken down into groups of four and the challenge was set to see who would become Edukick Manchesters Footgolf Champion. With a ball at the players feet, they had to get the ball in the hole with the least shots over 18 holes. The pressure was on at the 1st tee with all eyes on the first group taking their first shots. Over the 18 holes their were plenty of wayward shots from a few players, myself included who had to lose my shoes and socks to enter the water at one hole to retrieve my ball. The lads thoroughly enjoyed the trip with laughter coming from all four groups and a big well done to Naldo who won the competition, taking the least amount of shots to complete the course.

Head Coach Nigel talks about this week’s guest speaker – Harry Price

‘Director and founder of UK Football Trials Harry Price visited the school this week to talk to the lads about the upcoming football trials in April which they will be attending.

Harry kindly gave up his time to visit the squad at IH Manchester to share his expertise and knowledge on what scouts look for within a football player. The 90 minute talk was full of information regarding the 10 key areas scouts evaluate each player on during the 3 hour trial which is held at Woodley Sports Village. It was interesting to see as head coach how engaged the players were and how relevant the work we do on the training field is helping the lads with their preparation.

The lads were able to put questions to Harry about the process of being offered a trial within a professional / semi-professional club, who reiterated the importance of hard work, commitment and attitude were some of the key attributes a player must show to help secure a trial with a club.

The squad benefitted greatly from the advice given by Harry and as the players coach I will be looking at those who are prepared to transfer this information onto the playing field, looking to give themselves an advantage over the other players.’

Edukick Manchester visited the world class facilities of Manchester City for their Premier league fixture against Hull City on Saturday 8th April. The sky was clear blue as the lads in red enjoyed the atmosphere and million pounds worth of ability on show on the pitch.

The squad got to see the playing ability of David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure amongst others cruise to a 3-1 win and witnessed City dominate the possession and score some fantastic team goals. It was also an opportunity for the lads to observe the passing styles and the simplicity but effectiveness of the city team.

A great day had by all, the lads will visit Old Trafford next on Monday 24th April to watch the U23’s of Manchester United take on Tottenham Hotspur.

On Friday 31st March the Edukick Manchester squad were visited by Geoff Lomax, Regional Coach with the PFA (Professional Football Association).

Geoff kindly gave up a couple of hours of his time to visit the lads and speak to them about what the PFA do and his role within the company. Geoff also advised the lads on what it takes to become a qualified coach working at grassroots level all the way to coaching within a Premier league club.

The information shared by Geoff was very beneficial to the lads who were engaged throughout and provided some very interesting questions for Geoff to answer.

Many of the lads now are looking to gain their Level 1 Coaching Award by attending a course held locally.

Geoff who has played the game at a Professional level also offered some great advice to the lads going into the UK Football Trials.

I would like to thank Geoff for sharing his experience and knowledge with the lads and providing the opportunity for the lads to develop their own understanding of the game.

Edukick Manchester were delighted to be guests of Huddersfield Town Football Club this week. Huddersfield Town are an English championship club steeped in history. This season the club have had a tremendous season, only this week securing a place in the Championship play offs, which could see them reach the final at Wembley Stadium and a place in the English Premier league. Following investment into the club and bringing in the clubs first foreign head coach, German David Wagner, the club have surpassed all expectation and there is a real buzz around the Yorkshire town.

Edukick Manchester started off their trip to Huddersfield with a tour of the John Smith Stadium, home of the championship club. Rob Day from Huddersfield Town Foundation took the boys on a behind the scene trip showing the wannabe players where the stars of the first team change, getting them pitch side, highlighting the history of the club when just a few years prior they were struggling to survive in the big money game. All the Edukick players got a chance to sit round the board room table where the big money signings and manager sackings take place, taking the seat of where past stars such as Jordan Rhodes and club legend Andy Booth have sat to agree contract terms with the club.

Following the stadium tour Edukick Manchester headed off to the First team training ground, the Canalside sports complex to meet head of the Huddersfield Foundation Dean Grice. Dean showed the players where the first team train and explained how the training ground operates. It was a great atmosphere around the training ground as the first team players mixed with some of the Huddersfield fans to celebrate securing the play off place. A pre match meal was laid on for the Edukick side before a question and answer session with Huddersfield Towns all time legend Andy Booth.

Andy Booth retired from the professional game 8 years ago and is now a club ambassador for Huddersfield Town. Having started his career with Huddersfield as a school boy, local lad Andy went on to play 123 times for the Yorkshire side, scoring 52 goals before a £2.7 million move to Sheffield Wednesday of the premier league at the time. Making 133 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday scoring 28 goals Andy was with the club until 2001, when he had a short loan spell at Tottenham Hotspurs, appearing at White Hart lane for the London side 4 times. However as Huddersfield Town struggled to survive the threat of administration and the pressures of big money football in the UK Andy returned to his hometown club in 2001 to make a further 270 appearance, scoring 85 goals and helping them rebuild the Yorkshire side. In 2009 when he hung up his boots from football, Andy was handed the club ambassadors role as a legend of the side, and today he fronts community, charity and supporters events promoting the good work of the team.

EduKick Manchester @ Huddersfield TownTraining session at Huddersfield Town

It was a fantastic opportunity to hear what an experienced ex professional had to say, giving the Edukick players sound advice on their own career path. Andy spoke about playing against players such as Ruud Gullit, the pressures of the £2.7 million price tag, how football science has come on in the past years and how he wish maybe he’d listened to some of the nutrition and sports science advice and how the main thing he would tell any up and coming players is to train, work and play everyday session as if it’s the big match. Always push yourself and never relax in training, that’s the only way to progress and get on in football.

Following the fantastic afternoon at the training ground the Edukick players took the short journey to the Leeds road sports ground, soon to be one of Huddersfield Towns training facilities and currently used now by their evening academy sessions, to take on Kirklees College in a friendly fixture. The game, which ended in a 3-3 draw, Edukick Head coach Nigel believes Edukick could have won if a little care had been taken at the back, however the Edukick side dominated the game, scoring three fantastic goals. A performance to be proud of.

Once again a magnificent experience for the Edukick Manchester players to have a first-hand insight into the professional game in the UK. The trip tops off an action packed month of April where Edukick have been to the UK football trials, been coached by numerous Ex Professionals, seen Manchester City in action and have played some top sides from the area.

Edukick are delighted to announce that on Wednesday 24th May 2017 they will take on Sporting Futures USA at Ewood Park, the home of former Premier League Champions Blackburn Rovers.

In another ‘once in a lifetime experience’ for our Edukick players, the team will travel to Ewood Park to take to the hallowed turf of the stadium in an exhibition match with Sporting Futures USA. The team will get to play out a full fixture in the 31,000 all seater stadium, using all the facilities that the first team use on match days and where all the top English teams have played.

Blackburn Rovers FC are the most successful town team ever, having been founder members of the football league, founder members of the Premier league and famously winning the premier league in the 1994/95 season, clinching the title by 1 point from Manchester United.

The Edukick team will take up home for just a few hours in the Stadium, following in the footsteps of some of the Blackburn Rovers stars such as Alan Shearer & Chris Sutton. Having that experience of stadium football is a fantastic opportunity, sampling the world class facilities and walking out the tunnel to the vast stadium.

The opportunity arose as Blackburn Rovers Community trust invited Edukick to play at Ewood Park as part of their end of season activities. It’s an opportunity that thousands of young players and colleges across the UK would love to have, however with the fantastic link Edukick have developed over the years with professional clubs and in particular Blackburn Rovers, its credit to the level and standard of the academy set up at Edukick we are offered such a chance.

All the Edukick players will have that chance to feel like a professional footballer for the day. What a great way to end a fantastic season in Manchester

The game will kick off at 12.30pm on Wednesday 24th May at Ewood Park. Lots of footage of the fixture and pictures will be taken to celebrate the day and for the players to remember the day by.
